Topic Exploration--Transportation

This topic exploration is conducted by Omar, Gina and Jessica. They talked about some common issue occur in current life in transportation and wayfinding; like traffic congestion, automobile dependency, parking, long commute hours and environmental impacts. The solution they offered to those issue was Universal Design--“Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.”--Ron Mace.

During the whole presentation, I felt it was very hard to apply universal design in our daily lives because people are so different; everyone has their own need and own way of using things. Even more, as a designer, my pass experience and things I learned at school has formed a certain thinking pattern in my mind, and sometime it is very hard to think in others' shoes if I never experienced their pain point which lead to more difficulty to apply universal design. However, that doesn't mean those difficulty is not defetable. Tips that the team offered were very helpful. I think what is important for us as designer to apply universal design is to keep system thinking in mind and really figure out what other group of people involved in the system and make sure don't dismissed their needs as well.
