Weekly Reflection

For the past two weeks, I have been exploring topics for my thesis. Instead of looking for topics in trend, I was asking myself what I want to do and what matters to me, which helped me choose one of my concepts out of 5. In this post, I will explain how I approach my thesis.

Decision making

During my junior year, I have been collecting ideas and inspiration for my thesis. So at the beginning of my senior year, I was looking back on my notes and hoping to find one or two ideas that are worth developing. Eventually, I found two ideas that might potentially be a good choice; the Immersive Learning Room and the Neuro-Prosthetics.

I obsessed with tangible design and believed in it helps engage and excite human learning, and it is less compulsive. Immersive Learning Room was created based on this guideline and was specifically design for developing children's problem-solving skill. However, when I ask myself how much impact this idea will have to the world, I hesitated for a while because this is not an urgent issue for the world. That was why I came up with the Interactive Ecosystem Map, which is an installation designed for sharing information and educating people on how human activities systematically affects our environment. By the end I chose Interactive Ecosystem Map as my thesis exploring topic.

Process and reflection

After I have decided which topic to focus on, I bought that idea to my class. Our professor run a workshop for us which helped us explored the possibility keyword combination of technology, user group and social impact. However, I didn't know that the workshop was designed for thesis brainstorming so I chose the random keywords for that workshop. In the future, I would probably run this workshop again myself for brainstorming section.

Ecosystem covers numerous topics and areas to explore and study. It is hard for my to decide which area I want to focus on without knowing what are the topics or areas existing. So I started my research on how global warming affects the environment we live in and in what way. One thing I should have done is document my research process. I found some interesting content when I was randomly clicking through websites and browsing the contents. However, since I didn't document my research founding, I couldn't find the link to the article I was reading and forget what was the content about. So next time, I will keep it in mind to document all the instereting website link that I found so that I can go back to it later on.

TO-DO list

  1. Narrow down which climate change topic I want to focus on (is it sea level rising? species loss? or other area that I want to focus on?)
  2. Found out what big organizations are doing now and what is waiting to be done.
  3. Exploring the combination of different keywords.
